Sheffield became a star-maker when it welcomed 100 international astronomers for a 5-day conference entitled ‘From Taurus to Antennae’.
The event, which was held at the University of Sheffield, was the second in a series of conferences on star clusters. Delegates came from Argentina, Mexico, the USA, Korea, Japan, China and all over Europe to share up-to-the-minute research and knowledge.
The venue was ideal as it provided bespoke lecture theatres as well as a range of break-out spaces.
Simon Goodwin, a Lecturer in Astronomy at the University of Sheffield and Yorkshire South Conference Ambassador, organized the conference with key support from the Yorkshire South Conference Events team.
As well as a busy schedule of talks, that gave rise to some highly productive debates and discussions, the conference introduced delegates to the vibrant city of Sheffield and the beautiful scenery of South Yorkshire and the Peak District. One particular highlight was a sunny outing to Chatsworth House.
“We had lots of time to see the house and then wander around the grounds (and nobody got lost in the maze)”, said Simon. “Then we had an excellent meal at The Maynard in Grindleford. The lamb was excellent and I even had a Frenchman complimenting English food!”
The University is hosting another international conference later in 2009 called ‘The International Workshop on Pattern Recognition in Bioinformatics’. Like ‘From Taurus To Antennae’ it is an event that attracts an international delegates list, and has previously been in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore.
Simon is already busy bidding for an exciting large-scale national event for 2011 and is using Yorkshire South’s advice and services throughout the process.
